Sam Fender donates twenty-five thousand pounds cash award to small live spaces
The artist has handed over the full amount of his twenty-five thousand pound Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which functions to preserve the United Kingdom's small live music spots.
The star was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his new release People Watching was named the top album of the past year.
Fender has decided to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots had in his initial steps.
"I personally couldn't be pursuing my current career if it wasn't for all the performances I performed around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," remarked the artist. "These spaces are renowned, but they are facing challenges."
From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these venues have permanently closed – approximately 16 percent of the whole industry in the UK.
Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.
Fender also joined in, generating more than £100,000 on his recent tour to assist thirty-eight small stages across Britain.
The donation supported venues that were facing possible closure due to issues stemming from flooding, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, court cases and neighbor objections.
Some locations received monetary aid in modernizing amenities and sound and lighting systems that helped artists and fans.
"The notion that money from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," the star has said.
The musician is among several artists to give his award winnings to charitable organizations.
When they won the prize in the year 1996 for their release the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker stated that the band would donate their prize money to the organization War Child.
In 2002, musician she split her bounty among multiple organizations, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.
"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.
Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the youth organization that nurtured their band, alongside other grassroots music organisations.
Also 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a close contact was identified with the disease.
"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist Small. "The money was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our winning impacted somebody else's life."
Last week, the MVT announced it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by placing them under local control.
The first in the city and the other in Bristol were purchased under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by Arts Council England and supporters who acquire "shares" in the buildings.
