Matteo Cancellieri Displays Flashing Moments of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, a side that had let in 10 goals while managing only two goals in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Falling Apart?

Was Lazio's season coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element holding it together to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, only for him admitted that the management had failed to disclose a registration embargo they were facing for accounting issues. Reports that he could resign were not true, but he stated that Lotito had "misled" him.

The Roman club became as messy in their performances as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, including the Rome derby. Throughout this period, it has been hard to tell if they are improving or collapsing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

At least one man continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio during this campaign. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, during the summer break, his owning club were attempting to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed originally under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old alumnus of Verona's academy. He made 20 Serie A appearances with the club in 2022-23, all but one of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was persistently working to work out the nature of his skill set. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
