RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey said. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to take out dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
